Creative Space Evolution: Basement Corner to Dream art Studio

When I think back to how I started hosting paint parties, it's like remembering a wild ride from daydream to reality. It all began with a simple dream—having my own art studio where I could let loose and heal.

Back in early 2020, just before COVID-19 turned everything upside down, I was going through my second miscarriage. Painting had been my therapy during my first loss years ago. So this time, I knew I needed to jump right into it to keep me from spiraling into deep depression. It was my way of finding peace amidst the storm of emotions. Art has always been my thing, ever since high school days when I'd sit in class with my headphones on, painting away.

The Start of a Creative Journey

At that time, my family and I had moved in to my in-laws' basement due to mold issues in our home. It was cramped for the three of us, but I was determined to make it work. So, I snagged a corner of the room that doubled as a pool table area and got creative. My husband, who was working at IKEA then (they were closing down, so he brought home all sorts of shelves and desks—talk about a blessing!), helped me set up shop.

Picture this: giant notebook pages (meant for my toddler) taped to the wall, pages flapping in the basement breeze, and me, armed with paints and determination! Haha! It wasn't Pinterest-worthy, but it was mine—a colorful oasis in a sea of boxes and cramped space. From that corner, I started hosting virtual paint parties and nervously going LIVE on Facebook, bringing a little brightness to a world stuck indoors.

Creative Evolution

Fast forward to 2023, and we finally moved into our own place. I knew it was time to upgrade from that makeshift setup. I envisioned a room dedicated solely to art—a place where I could truly let my creativity run wild. Over the past year, I've turned that vision into reality and created my dream art studio.

Imagine walking into that space now: a splash of pink carpet, a mural inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night that I painted myself, which is my pride and joy. It's not just a workspace; it's my sanctuary, where inspiration flows freely. I even used the lyrics of one of my favorite worship songs in the mural to keep me motivated. It's a reminder to me when I'm going through low points that anything is possible with the Lord. (Go check out "More Than Able" by Elevation Worship on YouTube!)

One of my favorite parts is the paint wall—a genius idea borrowed from my mentor, Heidi, (she's the one that teaches how to start a paint party business)! It's so fun and colorful and doubles as a great way to store my paint! So it's a win-win! The room isn't just about art; it's also where I handle the business side of things. From my trusty computer desk to shelves filled with blank canvases and art supplies, printers and a heat press.... every corner tells a story of growth and determination.

Continuing to Evolve

My dream art studio isn't perfect yet, but it's a labor of love—a reminder that dreams don't have to stay dreams forever. It's where I continue to add and grow, and I'll gradually be sharing moments of joy and creativity with others who need a little spark in their lives through social media too.

Starting a business during a pandemic wasn't easy, but it taught me resilience and the importance of adapting. Through it all, I've learned that with a bit of creativity and a whole lot of passion, you can turn any space into a haven of inspiration.

As I look forward to what's next, I'm excited to see how my studio will continue to evolve—a testament to the power of pursuing your dreams, no matter where you start. Whether you're starting small in a basement corner or dreaming big for your own creative space, remember that every brushstroke is a step towards turning your vision into reality. Embrace the journey, and let your creativity shine.

I'd love to see what your creative space or dream art studio looks like! I love being inspired and hearing about the transformation you've experienced in your creative journey as well!
